The first oil field in the middle east was found in Iran. Oil litterly gushed from the rocks of the Zagros Mountains (highest point Yellow Mountain 4549m), near the northern tip of the Persian Gulf at the town of Masjed Soleyman.
Most of Iran's massive oil and natural gas deposits are onshore between the Zagros Mountains and Iraq or the Persian Gulf.
Compared to most other countries in the world, Iran has a significant offshore oil industry but not compared to their onshore reserves. Iranian oil reserves are second only to Saudi Arabia and only Russia has more natural gas.
