As you would expect from such a huge and diverse industry, all kinds of people from all kinds of backgrounds work in the oil industry.

Some just want to work for a few years and gather enough to start a business perhaps in a completely unrelated industry. For others, it is their dream career and they would do anything to save it.

For the majority of offshore employees that are stationed on the same Rig, it becomes like a second home. Many get very attached to it and talk fondly about "her".

Most people put great effort into getting along with their colleagues. Fights are rare, mainly because both parties would be instantly sacked regardless of blame.

A mechanic offshore once told me "Everyone offshore is a failure. If they were good at what they did, they would do it onshore." I do not agree but that comment always stuck in my head.

I knew a guy from the US that used to keep up his golf skills by going onto the heli-deck of the semi I was on and knock balls into the sea.

I have seen tough grown men with tears in their eyes because the Rig they had worked on for years was leaving to go to another country and they could not go with it. So yes, I agree for many people they love the life and job and the rig does become like a second home.
